- The following appeared on 16 February 1961 in The New York Times: (Brussels, Belgium, Feb. 15) A Sabena Airlines Boeing 707 jet crashed near the Brussels Airport early today, killing seventy-three persons, including the eighteen members of the United States figure-sakting team.
The plane, en route from New York, plunged to earth after it had twice circled the airport. The dead included the sixty-one passengers, the crew of eleven, and a farmer in the field where the plane fell.
The passengers included forty-nine Americans, a Swiss, a Frenchman, a German, a Canadian, a Nicaraguan and seven Belgians.
The American figure-skating team was on its way to a world championship meet in Prague. . . . - The following appeared on 16 February 1961 in The New York Times: Ex-Champions and Officials as Well as Competitors Die in Air Disaster. Following are sketches of passengers who were killed in yesterday's plane crash in Brussels: . . . Mr. and Mrs. Hartshorne. Harold Hartshorne, 70, a member of the New York Stock Exchange, and his wife, Louise, were flying with the United States team to serve as judges in the world figure skating championships They were both former figure skating champions. They lived at 31 East Seventy-ninth Street.
[:TAB;] Mr. Hartshorne, several times national dance skating champion during his long career, was president of the Skating Club of New York. He was a floor broker on the stock exchange, maintaining an office at E. F.
