  • The following appeared on 2 January 2012 in the Times-Georgian: Mrs. Annie Ruth Goff Powell, 92, a resident of Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, Carrollton, formerly of Villa Rica, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at Pine Knoll.
         She was born in Villa Rica on Aug. 27, 1919, the daughter of the late Homer Goff and the late Lillie Stewart Goff. She lived in multiple locations during the time her husband was serving with the military, and returned to Villa Rica when he retired. She was a retired school teacher, and taught English and Business Education at Villa Rica High School for several years before her retirement in 1974. She was active in Citizens Against Drug Abuse and Red Cross work as long as her health permitted, was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was named the 1982 Villa Rica Mother of the Year by the Villa Rica Junior Woman's Club. She was a member of the Villa Rica First United Methodist Church and served for many years on the church's administrative board. Her hobbies included crocheting and bridge.
         In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Powell Jr., in 1955, a great-granddaughter, Emily Grace Powell; six brothers, Harry Goff, James Goff, Clarence Goff, Frank Goff, Jack Goff and Bobby Goff; and two sisters, Wilma Goff Waldrop and Virgie Goff Raney.
         Survivors include her children, Dr. William D. Powell III and his wife, Linda, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kay Powell Powell and her husband, Warren, of Bowdon; two brothers, Charles Goff of Douglasville and Roy Goff of Jackson; grandchildren, Holly Powell Williams of Panama City, Fla., Eric G. Powell of Bowdon, Richard D. Powell and Christine Ann (Christy) Powell Overton, both of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Caroline & Olivia Williams, Nathan, Carter, Ellen & Stewart Powell and Elisabeth, Katelyn & Will Overton; and a number of nieces and nephew.
         Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at the chapel of the J. Hoyt Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Phillips and the Rev. Derek Porter officiating. Pallbearers will be Eric Powell, Todd Williams, Richard Powell, Davis Overton, Freddie Dodson and Herman Waits. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Villa Rica.
         The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the funeral hour. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so may make a contribution to The Building Fund, Villa Rica First United Methodist Church, 206 North Avenue, Villa Rica, GA 30180.
