  • Mathias M. Marshall was born circa 1841 in Pitsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina.
  • "Early records show that St. James [Episcopal Church] started as Banks Chapel (a Colonial Church of England congregatin) in 1760. Later the church moved to Kittrell Springs in 1859. During that time the Rev Mathias M. Marshall of St. James conducted the
    Rite of Christian Burial to over 50 Confederate Soldiers that died at the
    Kittrell Springs Hotel, and are buried in the Confederate Cemetery located two
    blocks away. . . ."
  • He married Margaret Wingfield, daughter of John O. Wingfield and Elizabeth (?), on 12 July 1866 in Portsmouth, North Carolina.
  • Mathias M. Marshall and Margaret Wingfield appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. Other members of the household included Theodora Marshall. Also in he household were children John W. (age 12), Maude M. (10), Eliza S. (8) and Margaret S (2), as well as unmarried sister henrietta Marshall (26) and half-brother William T. Brewer (20).
  • He was a minister, according to the 1880 census.
  • The following appeared on 17 October 1906 in The Raleigh Times: The marriage of Miss Theodora Marshall, the youngest daughter of Rev. Dr. M. M. Marshall, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, and Mr. Duncan Haywood Cameron, son of the late Gen. Francis Cameron, was solemnized at Christ Church this morning at 10:30 o'clock.
         The church was decorated with chrysanthemums and candles.
         The ushers were Messrs. Edgar Haywood, William Syme, George Little and Armistead J. Cowand.
         The organist was Mrs. Frank Hawkins of Winona, Mississippi.
         The bride's gown was of embroidered Canton crepe, and she carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley.
         The bride was given away by her brother, Mr. J. K. Marshall.
         Miss Susie Marshall, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore China silk and carried white chrysanthemums.
         The Best man was Lieut. Allen Rogers, a cousin of the groom.
         The ceremony was performed by Dr. Marshall, the bride's father.
         Mr. and Mrs. Cameron left this morning for their future home in Hong Kong, China, via Richmond and Cincinatti to San Francisco.
         Among the out-of-town relatives and friends here to attend the marriage were Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Butt of Portsmouth, Miss Lucy Edwards of Ridgeway, Mrs. Frances Cameron of New York and Col. and Mrs. Benehan Cameron.
  • Mathias M. Marshall died on 22 October 1912 in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina.
  • The following appeared on 24 October 1912 in The Caucasian: Dr. M. M. Marshall, for thirty-three years rector of Christ Church, of this city, died at Morganton Tuesday afternoon after an illness of several years. The remains reached Raleigh yesterday afternoon and will be laid to rest to-day.
