She was born Oct. 15, 1926 in Beaumont, Texas, and grew up there. She went to college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. While at the university she met Phil Dougherty, and they were married April 20, 1946 in Memphis.
Jane began painting in the early 1950s and enjoyed great success in her work. She was best known for her portraits, but in the 1960s also Dougherty painted abstract paintings. She presented at many shows and won awards for her work at various art festivals during the 1960s.
Later in life Jane concentrated on other interest, particularly reading and cooking. She had a keen interest in the world, and never lost interest in what was happening until she was silenced by a stroke two days before her death.
She is survived by her husband, Phil, of Magnolia; daughter, Mandy of Boulder, Colo; son, Phil of Sammamish, Wash; daughterin-law, Susan; and granddaughter, Jenny, also of Sammamish.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. James Episcopal Church in Magnolia. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Home in Magnolia.
