On Tuesday, 11 May 1848, Green Wood recorded in his travel journal: "The lands near St Josey are cultivated & Irigated by canals. Mr Beck lives near that place between the San Antonio. The Distance from Austin
to the Dutch Town Braunsfel is 50 miles & from there to San Antonio 30 miles, making 80 miles from Austin the Capitol. Corn worth $1.25 at this place, the last year very dry & a poor crop made."
