- A biographical sketch of Samuel Clark Oliver appears in W. G. Robertson's 1892 Early Settlers::
Dr. Samuel C. Oliver, an early citizen of Montgomery county, was a man of wealth and influence. He represented his county in the Legislature almost continuously for fifteen or eighteen years, and no man stood higher in the esteem of his fellow citizens than did Dr. Olivers. In politics he was a Whig, in religion he was a Methodist, but conservative and liberal in his views. He was never abusive to his political opponents, but on the stump and in the hustings met their argument with argument. He was educated and a fluent debater. He was popular with his people, and was never defeated. He always signed his name "Sam C. Oliver." His wife was Mildred McGehee. They had a splendid family of children, three sons and two daughters. The oldest daughter was born the night the stars fell, as it was commonly called, and she was named Mary Meteora. Major Thomas W. Oliver is the only son living. Dr. Oliver was an elder brother of the Rev. Christopher D. Oliver of the alabama Conference; and still another younger was Dr. John A. Oliver, who died in early manhood.
