Sylvester Hawkins was born on 6 February 1891 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.
Sylvester Hawkins registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 in Harris County, Texas, while single and living at 834 West 27th in Houston Heights, employed there by Oriental Textile Mills, and sole support of a young niece and nephew.
He married Bessie Baldtrip, daughter of Maxie C. Baldtrip and Rena McFadden, on 11 May 1918 in Harris County, Texas, by license issued the same day, with Rev. William W. Lindsey officiating.
Bessie Baldtrip and Sylvester Hawkins appeared in the US federal census of 1 January 1920 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, at 2215 Nashua Street. Also in the household were Sylvester's father Henry Hawkins (age 57) and foster children Evelyna (9) and Edward (4-5/12) Dow.

Sylvester Hawkins registered for the draft in 1942 in Floyd County, Texas, while living at Mickey star route in Lockney, and employed there as a farm hand by T. B. Mitchel.
Sylvester Hawkins died on 3 December 1946 at age 55 in Rosenberg, Fort Bend County, Texas, . His death was officially witnessed by Bessie Baldtrip.
