Vergil was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Rice University. He married Judy Carter on July 5, 1958, in Amarillo.
Vergil sold and serviced production departments of large newspapers in the United States and abroad for 25 years. He led a full and active life. After winning the Soap Box Derby in Amarillo, he finished 11th in the national finals. He played football for the Amarillo High School Sandies and Rice University. He served in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne as a paratrooper.
As a family member of Welch Quarter Horse Co., he raised, trained and raced horses. Hunting and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. He had many loyal canine companions.
The Welch family wishes to thank the BSA Hospice staff for loving and excellent care, especially Twila and Ginny.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Welch; a son, Kevin Welch and wife Karen of Wildorado; two daughters, Kelli Splawn of Wildorado and Erin Welch of Amarillo; a grandson, Jake Splawn; a brother, Kenneth Welch; and a sister-in-law, Pat Morgan and husband Rex.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Amarillo SPCA, P.O. Box 1014, Amarillo, TX 79108.
