Maxwell Register was born circa 1843 in Alabama.
Max Register enlisted 22 April 1862 at Alexandria, Louisiana, for the duration of the war, as a private in Company E, 16th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, CSA.
Maxwell Register appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Rutledge PO, Crenshaw County, Alabama, enumerated in the household of George W. Thagard, Judge of Probate.
He was a clerk in the probate office, according to the 1870 census.
He married Jennie Neves on 12 December 1874 in Austin County, Texas.
Maxwell Register and Jennie Neves appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Sabine County, Texas. Other members of the household included Alice Register and Mary Agnes Register. Also in the household were "nease" Minnie Holt, age 11, and a farm worker.
