- The following appeared on 13 September 1963 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The death of William L. Mellon III in Yarmouthport, Mass., Tuesday, was under investigation here yesterday by police and medical authorities.
Mr. Mellon, 30, a pre-medical student at Boston University, had been missing from his home in Yarmouthport since Monday. His body was found Tuesday in the family automobile on a wooded side road.
Members of Mr. Mellon's family said he recently had been suffering from nervousness and fatigue. Investigators are awaiting a report on an autopsy.
He was the son of Dr. William L. Mellon Jr., who operates the famed Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschappelles, Haiti, and Mrs. Grace R. Veiller, of Los Angeles, Calif.
He was the grandson of the late W. L. Mellon, long the chairman of Gulf Oil Corp., and the grand nephew of Paul Mellon, of Pittsburgh.
Mellon, a graduate of St. Paul's School and Princeton University, served for two years as a jet pilot in the Air Force. On the conclusion of his military service, he married LeGrand Council, of Greenville, Miss., and they made their home at Yarmouthport.
At the time of his death he was pursuing medical studies to qualify as a physician so he could work at his father's hospital in Haiti.
The hospital was founded by Dr. Mellon to treat the natives of the Artibonite Valley.
T^he younger Mellon was a director of the Grant Foundation and a member of the African-American Committee. He is survived by his wife, his father and his mother. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
