She was born on January 14, 1926, in Port Arthur, Texas, to John Hilman Stanley and Georgia Celeste Pattison Stanley. Jane married William "Bill" J. Terrell on August 7, 1948. They moved to Navasota in 1953 where they raised cotton, grain and cattle at Terrell Farms in Allenfarm, Brazos County, Texas.
Jane is a 1946 graduate of Texas Christian University with a degree in Biology. Jane was actively involved in many community activities, including being a founding Board Member and President of the Navasota Public Library, Board Member of the Grimes County Historical Society, Treasurer of the Navasota Red Cross, Camp Fire Girls leader, Secretary of the Crouch Memorial, Grimes County Precinct Chairman and Election Judge, Red Cross swimming instructor, a member of the Promenade Club and the 21 Club. Her accomplishments were recognized by the community in 1992 when she was given the Community Service Award by the Grimes County Chamber of Commerce. A Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota, she taught Sunday School, Bible School and was a Women's Circle leader. Jane was also a biology and chemistry teacher in the Navasota and Anderson Public Schools.
An avid genealogist, historian, artist, gardener and reader, Jane volunteered her time as the archivist for the Navasota Public Library and took enormous pride in restoring the landmark Emory-Terrell home in Navasota. She was instrumental in starting the first Home Tour in Navasota in the 1970's. Jane cataloged, promoted and distributed the paintings and diaries of noted artists, Kathleen Blackshear and Ethel Spears, whose works are in the Smithsonian Institute and in museums across the country.
In the 1980's Jane established the Brazos Valley Vineyards, one of the first wine grape vineyards in Central East Texas. A member of the Texas Grape Growers Association, she was often recognized by Texas A & M University for frequently offering her vineyard to students, foreign consultants and professors for tours and experimentation.
Jane is survived by her husband of 56 years, William J. Terrell; her daughter, Kathleen Terrell; her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Dexter Davis; her son and daughter-in-law, William J., Jr. and Margie Terrell, all of Navasota; her grandchildren, Celeste, Matt and Terrell Carter, Jane and Mary Davis, and Alex, Morgan and Allison Terrell; her sisters, Alpha Mell Stanley Stuart of San Diego, California, and Naomi Stanley Echlin of El Paso; her sister and brother-in-law, Patsy Stanley and Hubert Davis of Groves; her brother and sister-in-law, John Hilman and Clemence Stanley of Burton and her sister-in-law, Mary Terrell Pederson, formerly of Navasota now of Houston.
A visitation was held between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Nobles Funeral Home in Navasota. A Memorial Service was conducted by nephews, Rev. William C. Pederson of Round Rock and Rev. Robert G. Hofmann of Burton at the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2005.
Pallbearers are Stan Davis, Bob Davis, Doug Echlin, Jack Stanley, Lee Stanley, Chris Stuart, Matt Carter, Alex Terrell and Morgan Terrell. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Ketchum, Bud Powell, Gerald Purcell, Bill Lucas, Luke Lucas, Louis Trimble, Mack Newberry, Jim Newberry and John Webb.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Friends of the Navasota Public Library, E. H. and Ura Crouch Memorial Fund or the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota. - She was interred at Oakland Cemetery, Navasota, Grimes County, Texas.
