Dr. Barbara Lavelle Hill Elliott, a retired educator, was born Feb. 25, 1935, in Rosebud, Texas, to the union of Mose and Malinda (Jones) Johnson Hill. Barbara graduated from A.J. Moore High School in Waco. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, and pursued and received the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Rice University in Houston. Barbara was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), the oldest Greek-letter organization established in America by Black college women in 1908 at Howard University.
Dr. Elliott taught for many years at the following higher education institutions located in Houston, Texas Southern University, Rice University and The Houston Read Commission. She was also the owner and operator of a private Literacy Education institution.
Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Mose Hill III; mother, Malinda Johnson Hill Jones; father, Mose Hill Sr; sister, Dr. Dorothy L. Smith, Ed.D; and brother-in-law, Edward H. Smith.
She leaves to celebrate her life, daughter, Flora Elliott-Davis, MA and son-in-law, Pastor Joseph G. Davis; grandchildren, Rachel Lynn Davis and Joseph Elliott Davis; beloved sister, Ernestine Hill Warren; nieces, Charlotte Stephens, Deborah Elaine Goffney, Dr. Kathy Kaigler-Ransom, Ed.D., Deidre Smith, Tracie Bocock and husband, Dr. Philip Bocock, Ph.D, TaBorah Goffney; and nephew, L. J. Goffney; and a host of other relatives and friends.
