  • The following appeared on 12 July 1888 in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger: One of the saddest accidents that it has ever been our duty to record occurred at the Oxford depot last Thursday morning, by which Jimmie Pegues, a bright and promising lad of fourteen years, lost his life. It seems that the boys of the town were in the habit of visiting the depot and as the trains would move off, catching to and riding a fewe yards on them and then jumping off. On that morning a few boys were present and as the frieght train came in, proposed to have a ride. Jimmie grasped at the ladder, missed his footing and fell, the car wheels passing over him, severing one limb above and one below the knee. Several physicians were hastily summonded and after consultation decided not to amputate the limbs as it would be impossible for him to recover. He died about three hours after, fully conscious of all that happened. His remains were interred here on Friday, and to his widowed mother and sorrowing relatives we extend our deepest sympathy.--Oxford Eagle.
