- The following appeared on 22 September 1904 in The Dallas Morning News: (Sulphur Springs, Sept. 20) The case of Greenwood Abercrombie, charged with the killing of Charley Carter in Rains County in 1901, was put on trial in the District Court this morning. Carter married a daughter of the defendant's brother, Albert Abercrombie, and took out a policy of insurance in her favor. He was assassinated, and the State's theory is that the shooting was done by the defendant at the instigation of Albert Abercrombie, who is also under indictment as an accomplice. The case was tried once in Rains County, the verdict being life imprisonment. A new trial and change of venue came in due course.
There are more than a hundred citizens of Rains County here in attendance, nearly all as witnesses. - The following appeared on 25 September 1904 in The Dallas Morning News: (Sulphur Springs, Sept. 24) The trial of Greenwood Abercrombie, charged with the killing of Charlie Carter in Rains County in December, 1901, resulted in a verdict of acquittal yesterday afternoon.
Albert Abercrombie, brother of the defendant & father-in-law of the man killed is under indictment on the same charge. - Greenwood Abercrombie and Iziah Virginia Dunn appeared in the US federal census of 15 April 1910 in Hopkins County, Texas.
