- The following appeared on 12 September 2007 in The Albany Herald: (Leesburg) Thomas Page Tharp, 77, of Leesburg died Sunday, September 9, 2007, at his home after a brief struggle with cancer. He was a lifelong Lee County resident and a 1947 graduate of Leesburg High School. He was a graduate of Emory University where he was awarded a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1951 and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and the Emory Glee Club. He was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church and previously served as a deacon of the Leesburg First Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict during which he was appointed Lee County Treasurer in 1952 at the death of his father, who had held the office since 1918. He retired from that office in 1992. He was appointed the first full-time administrator of Lee County where he had also served as Clerk of the Lee County Board of Commissioners. His other areas of public service included serving as Clerk of the City of Leesburg. He had served on the Lee County Board of Health, on the advisory board of HCA Palmyra Medical Center and as past commander of American Legion Post 182. He had managed Tharp Insurance Agency founded by his father in 1910.
He was a devoted husband and father and took great pride and interest in his family’s activities. Most recently, he was a dedicated grandfather attending as many of his grandchildren’s sporting, music, and school activities around Georgia as possible until July of this year. He enjoyed the friendship of many lifelong friends as well as new acquaintances. His love for Lee County was evident throughout his life, and he was delighted with the county’s development during his professional career and beyond. He had served as contributor to the Lee County Chamber of Commerce’s chronicles of the County history: A Train Ran Through It, and The Caboose Came Last.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patricia Dunaway Tharp; two sons, Thomas Page Tharp Jr. (Daphne) of Leesburg and Jeffrey Lanier Tharp (Louise) of Marietta; grandsons: Andrew Alex Tharp, Garrison Heath Tharp, both of Leesburg, and Addison Harris Tharp of Marietta; niece: Myra Moye Morgan (Larry) of Columbus; nephew: Allen Tharp Moye of Cuthbert; brothers-in-law: Harvey Lanier Dunaway Jr. of Columbus, David Dunaway (Sandra) of Lumpkin and Danny Dunaway of Columbus and sister-in-law, Margaret (Dunaway Allmon (Russell) of Lumpkin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Cobb Tharp and Pauline Page Tharp of Leesburg and sister, Florence M. Tharp Moye (A.J.) of Cuthbert.
Services will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Leesburg United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bobby Moye, Mike Lyons and Eugene Barlow officiating. Interment will follow immediately at the Leesburg Cemetery.
