- The following appeared on 27 July 2010 in the Arlington Heights Daily Herald: Joseph "Joe" McGreal, born in Chicago almost 89 years ago, died Friday, July 23, 2010. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia "Ginny" (nee Muszynski) McGreal; dear father of Donna (Bob) Clemens, Rich (Diane), Joanne (Ed) McCallum, Jean (John) Diedrich and Laura (Dan) Kliebhan; loving grandfather of Christopher, Douglas, Cecilia, Joey, Patrick, Ryan and Shannon; and fond brother of Loretta (Martin) Barrett, Therese (the late Ray) Saxelby and the late Barbara (Jack) Malloy, Roger (Marion) McGreal, Donald McGreal, Frank McGreal and John (Lillian) McGreal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Beatrice McGreal. Joe proudly served in the Navy and saw action in the North Atlantic & Pacific during World War II, swimming away from his ship when it was sunk by a kamikaze; he rose from payroll clerk to director, over a 38-year career with Illinois Bell. He was of strong faith and a devout Irish Catholic, a longtime member of St. Michaels Church in Wheaton, a 30-year winter time parishioner of St. Isabel of Sanibel, Fla., and a member of the community of faith at Alexian Brothers Village, Signal Mountain, Tenn. Joe was a wonderful husband, a loving father, grandfather, avid sailor and traveler, and a great friend to all who knew him. He lived in the western suburbs most of his married life but always remembered his roots on the South Side -- in particular all his family and friends from Saint Sabina parish. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton, IL 60187 (one block east of Naperville Road). Funeral prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home, proceeding to St. Michael Church in Wheaton for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery. Memorials to the National Parkinson Foundation . . . or the American Heart Association appreciated.
