Mary J. Moore

b. circa 1837
  • Mary J. Moore was born circa 1837 in Georgia.
  • She married (?) Edwards.
  • Mary J. Moore appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Hamilton PO, Harris County, Georgia. Other members of the household included Arletia Edwards and Ada Edwards.
  • Mary J. Moore appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. Other members of the household included Cullie A. Smith, Affa M. Smith and Emma Smith.
  • The following appeared on 10 December 1898 in The Columbus Enquirer-Sun:
Mrs. Mary Edwards died at the residence of Mr. J. M. Diffley, at No. 1821 First avenue, at 4:15 o'clock yesterday morning, after an illness of eleven days of paralysis. She suffered her third stroke of paralysis on last Sunday week. The deceased was 64 years of age and was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist church.
Mrs. Edwards was an aunt of Mrs. J. M. Diffley, at whose residence she died; Mrs. John Cox, of East Highlands; Mrs. Dr. Cameron, of Atlanta; Mrs. William Boothe, Mrs. A. A. Richards and Mrs. J. A. Barr, of Phenix City, Mrs. Ida Williams [sic], Mrs. Emma Hadley, Mrs. C. LeFrancis, of Pensacola, Fla; Mrs. Affa Moore, of this city. She also leaves three nephews, as follows: Mr. W. B. Smith, of Hamilton; Mr. Joe Smith, of Truitt, Ala; Mr. R. E. Moore, of Phenix City.
The funeral and interment will take place at Mulberry Grove, fourteen miles north of the city, at about 12 o'clock today. [There is little doubt that Ida Williams was Ida Smith, wife of John William Mitchell.]
  • It appears that Mary Edwards was the sister of either William Smith or Amanda Moore, based on the apparent presence of three of their daughters in her household in the 1880 census, and the nieces and nephews cited in Mary Edwards' obituary.
  • RESEARCH NOTE: Circumstantial evidence found in the censuses tie together John A. Moore with Amanda L. Moore Smith and Mary J. Moore Edwards as siblings, with a key piece being the latter's obituary naming nieces and nephews. It does not, however, appear to be supported by any other family researchers; more evidence needs to be gathered.
