- May Manning appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Grimes County, Texas. Other members of the household included James Alexander McMillan, Joseph Manning. Also in the household was school teacher Alexander McMillan, age 35, apparently a brother of James Alexander with an incorrect name and age.
- He married Valeria (?) circa 1858.
- James Alexander McMillan and Valeria (?) appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Fairfield PO, Freestone County, Texas. Other members of the household included Archibald McMillan.
- He was a farmer, according to the 1860 census.
- On Sunday, 24 November 1861, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Delivered James McMillan 63 Head of Ewes & received four 50 Dollar Treasury notes and a Draft on Bush & Baker Huntsville for $50."
- James Alexander McMillan died on 2 February 1905 at age 78 in Tenaha, Shelby County, Texas.
