- He was deputy sheriff, according to the 1850 census.
- The following appeared on 24 December 1850 in The Daily Picayune: A gentleman by the name of Harthcock was shot dead in Yazoo county, Miss., a few days since by the deputy sheriff, W. H. Mangum. Mangum was in the act of arresting him for some misdemeannor, when H. drew his weapons, a bowie knife and pistol, in resistance, and was shot.
- William H. Mangum and Martha C. (?) appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Yazoo, Yazoo County, Mississippi. Other members of the household included Margaret Louisa Mangum, Frances Isabella Mangum, William W. Mangum and Singleton Mangum. Apparently there were also two boarders in the household, a mechanic and a lawyer; it is possible that mechanic J. W. Moore, age 30, was Martha's brother.
- He was sheriff, according to the 1860 census.
- William H. Mangum died in 1861.
- He was interred at Glenwood Cemetery, Yazoo County, Mississippi.
