  • Alexander J. Miller appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Marlboro District, South Carolina. Other members of the household included Alexander J. Miller Jr., Rebecca Miller. Mary Miller likely was his mother. Also in the household is Mrs. T. Hamilton (age 40), and two young male laborers. The family is living next to tavern keeper Philip Miller (age 47), born in Germany.

  • He was a school teacher, according to the 1860 census.
  • It is probable that he died as a prisoner of war in May 1865, in the War Camp Hospital, Point Lookout, Maryland. However, it is remotely possible that he was enumerated in the 1880 census as a teacher in Eastland County, Texas.
