- =====================
Dr. H. S. Hughes was born in Connecticut in about 1815. He was married to Miss Theodora L. Scott in Walker County, Texas, on 7 December 1856. Theodora was born in Virginia. In 1858, he purchased a seven-acre tract near Danville from Dr. J. V. Wright. Dr. Hughes was enumerated in the town of Danville in 1860 with his wife and small daughter, next to Dr. Samuel D. Wooldridge. His estate was valued at $3800. In 1861, his office in Danville was on the south side of College Street, today's West Danville Road, just east of the Baptist Church tract. In 1861 through 1863, he paid taxes on seventeen acres in the Joseph Lindley League, one slave and one horse. In 1862, Mrs. Hughes was the secretary of the Soldiers' Aid Society, composed of ladies of Danville, which collected food for the needy families of Galveston. In 1864, Dr. Hughes paid taxes on a lot in Danville, one slave, and $5,600 in Confederate notes. By 1865, his total wealth consisted of one lot in Danville and a horse. Dr. Hughes continued to practice in Danville and was enumerated there in 1860 as a physician, with his wife and daughter, Rosa. By 1870, Dr. and Mrs. Hughes had moved to Palestine, Anderson County, and he was still a practicing physician. Nothing further is known about Dr. Hughes.
