- Ophelia was born circa 1850 in Texas and the identity of her parents is as yet unknown.
- Following emancipation, Ophelia adopted the name Ophelia Wood.
- Smith and Sylvey appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Danville PO, Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included Ophelia, Rena, Ned Eastman Barnes, Perry Barnes and Benjamin Barnes. The identity of Ophelia's parents is as yet unknown.
- She was a farm laborer, according to the 1870 census.
