- Sam was born circa 1840 in Louisiana and his family origins are not yet known.
- He married Mahaley, daughter of Henry and Creacy, say 1865.
- Following emancipation, Sam adopted the name Samuel Lewis.
- Sam and Mahaley appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Waller County, Texas. Other members of the household included Edmund Louis, Thomas Lewis, Samuel Lewis, George Lewis, Mattie Lewis and Pinkey Lewis. Also in the household was widow Patina Johnson, age 66, born in South Carolina.
