- The following appeared on 26 May 1883 in the Bastrop Advertiser: Amos Gates died at his residence near the town of Washington, on Thursday, the 3rd inst. at the great age of 84 years. He was the oldest settler of Washington County and was the first white man to cross to the West side of the Brazos River. He was the advance guard of Austin's Colony of 300 and arrived in what is now Washington County in 1821. He was the first white settler of that County, having settled the place on which he died, and lived there until his death. He was a native of Kentucky.
