- James Madison Kellett was born circa 1811 in Laurens District, South Carolina.
- James Madison Kellett appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included John Garland Kellett and Nancy Kellett.
- He married Sarah A. Dunlap, daughter of William Dunlap and Elizabeth (?), on 7 January 1851.
- On Thursday, 11 March 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Sent 9 2 horse plows to bed up 10 Acres land for Mr Kellet a sick man," and on Saturday, the 20th, "Sent four plows & 3 boys to plant Kellet's corn (finished it.)"
- James Madison Kellett became a widower at the between 1855 and 1860 death of his wife Sarah A. Dunlap.
- On Tuesday, 15 November 1859, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Sent off 8 Bales of cotton by Kellet's waggon."
- On Tuesday, 13 December 1859, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Commenced Gining for Mat Kellet," and Friday, the 23rd, "Packed 18 Bales of M. Kellet's cotton," and on the following day, "Packed 2 Bales cotton for M. Kellet making 20 Bales."
- Green Wood recorded on a blank page in his account book, "January 10th 1960, Packed 10 Bales of cotton for Wm Walters, Marked JEG; put in one Bale 119 lb of M. Kellets cotton, used 29 lb of Kellets rope & baging for two Bales, used of my baging for two bales & found the twine for 10 bales."
