Civic involvement: Past president and member of the Demopolis Rotary Club; named a Paul Harris Fellow for longtime service and contributions to Rotary, and recently named to special honorary status by local club. Former chairman and 7 year member of the Demopolis City Board of Education. Past president and board member of the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1990 given a Special Honorary Membership Award in recognition of a lifetime of service to the community. Member of First United Methodist Church which he served for many terms on the administrative board and as a member of the choir for over 50 years. A founder and past chairman of the Blackbelt Baseball League as well as many other area sports associations. Organizing member of the Demopolis Country Club. Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Cornish George, Demopolis; five daughters, Martha George Griffith (Mrs. E. P. Griffith, Jr.), Demopolis, Jane George Watson, Demopolis, Kayte George Melton (Mrs. Thomas G. Melton), Demopolis, Sally George Cobb (Mrs. A. Mitchell Cobb), Mobile, Donnie George Ford (Mrs. Wentworth Ford), Chicago. Ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 21, at 2 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Demopolis with interment in Riverside Cemetery.
