- John Thompson Westmoreland was born circa 1829 in Montgomery County, Alabama.
- He married Nancy Guynn, daughter of Isom Guynn and Mary Wicker, on 15 December 1853.
- "June 19th, Mailed three Dollars for the Washington Union for Bede Johnson, J. T. Westmoreland & Zill McCaleb.", Green Wood recorded: In his "1855 Account of money sent to Editors."

Henry Lagrone was Green O'Banion's son-in-law. - John Thompson Westmoreland and Nancy Guynn appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Montgomery PO, Montgomery County, Texas, enumeratednear Nancy's mother Mary Worthy.. Other members of the household included M. E. Westmoreland, W. G. Westmoreland and J. R. Westmoreland.

- J. T. Westmoreland joined the Danville Mounted Riflemen on May 4, 1861, and was present for the musters of September 13, 1861 and February 14, 1862. On April 28, 1862, he enlisted in the Second Texas Lancers with Captain S. D. Wooldridge at Danville, and was named the company bugler. He was mustered in at Hempstead at age thirty-three, and rode his horse to Arkansas, where he was dismounted along with the others at El Dorado on July 28, 1862. After being dismounted, he was trained in infantry tactics at Camp Holmes near Pine Bluff. His regiment was assigned to Garland's Brigade, which was sent to Ft. Hindman at Arkansas Post in the fall of 1862. John fought in the Battle of Arkansas Post, where he was captured by Union forces on January 11, 1863, and was sent to prison at Camp Butler, Illinois.
- On Wednesday, 1 January 1862, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Settled with Westmoreland &c, gave my Note for $445.45. Settled with Green, Fox & Clarke, gave my Note $271.50."
- On Thursday, 12 February 1862, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Bought a Sorrel Horse mule 4 years old of Mr Westmoreland $150."
- John Thompson Westmoreland died on 29 October 1911 in Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas.
- His wife Nancy Guynn became a widow at his death.
- He was interred at Lakeside Cemetery, Colorado County, Texas.
