  • The following appeared on 4 January 2007 in The Eagle: Services for Joyce Jones Smither, 82, of Navasota are set for 10:00 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Navasota. The Rev. Tim Bruegger of the First United Methodist Church of Anderson and the Rev. Jerry House, Jr. of Christ United Methodist Church of College Station will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Anderson under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday with the family present from 5:00 Ð 7:00 p.m. /P/ Mrs. Smither died Monday, January 1, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. She was born November 5, 1924 in Anderson, Texas the daughter of Robert L. and Alline Jones. She graduated salutatorian from Navasota High School in 1942. Joyce continued her education at The University of Texas where she graduated with honors in 1947, with a Bachelors degree in geology. Mrs. Smither began her career with Humble Oil in Houston where she remained until her marriage. She returned to Anderson in 1964 to raise her children and later joined the family business, Grimes County Abstract Company which she managed until her retirement in 1992. Mrs. Smither was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Anderson where she served as Treasurer for many years. She also held leadership roles in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. /P/ Since her retirement she enjoyed the company of many wonderful friends and spent numerous hours with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son Robert Biggs Smither on April 4, 1981. /P/ Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Joyce Alline and Neal Alan Briers of College Station; three grandchildren: Joseph Neal Briers, Dillon Robert Briers and Erin Nicole Briers of College Station; sister: Bobbye Woodmansee of Houston; two nephews and one niece. /P/ Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Anderson or the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association.
