He was born April 30, [sic] 1923, in Gallion, AL to Sylvester and Mary Bert Torbert. One of two children, Jim moved to Mobile in 1941. A veteran, Jim served as a Seabee in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Coden United Methodist Church where he faithfully served as counter of the tithes and offerings. Jim also enjoyed cleaning and frying fish with the men of the church for Heritage Days. One of his passions in life was boats. He was always selling them, fixing them, talking about them, or riding in them. This passion was passed down to his son, daughter and grandsons. There wasn't anything "Big Jim" couldn't fix--from plumbing old pipes to mending family broken hearts. His love for family was unconditional and his relationships with friends, special. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held June 9, 2012, 11:00 AM, at the Coden United Methodist Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to his church or the . Pop/Peeps will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
