Born September 6, 1925, George was an investment banker and advocate of Montgomery, supporting many local philanthropic and civic organizations. He was a past-president of the Montgomery Kiwanis Club, past-president of the Montgomery County Historical Society, President of the Pioneers of Montgomery, Chairman of Operation Drug Alert, and served on the Board of Directors of Montgomery Area Mental Health, and of the Alabama National Fair. George was a life-long member of Saint John's Episcopal Church. He was a student at Starke University High School-1941, Auburn University-1942, University of Illinois-1943, member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and was graduated from the University of Texas 1946. He served as Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Korean War 1950 - 1951. His career included Chairman and CEO of George M. Wood and Co. Inc., from 1946 through 1990, and he retired as Senior Vice-President of Synovus Securities, Inc. on December 31, 2009. He was formerly a Director and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Thermal Components, Inc., and member of the National and Alabama Security Dealers Association serving as member of the Board of Conduct, and as vice-chairman district five. He was preceded in death by his father George Mark Wood and mother Mattie Pegues Wood. Survivors include his wife Marguerite McDaniel Wood of 31 years; daughter Meri Wood Moody (Dee) of Montgomery, AL; sister Sallie Wood Millsap of Montgomery, AL; step-children Marguerite Powell McCowan (Chad) of Birmingham, AL; Frances Powell Bryan (Charles) of Meridian, MS; Arthur Gray Powell III (Kenny) of Birmingham, AL; nephews Eugene Temple Millsap III of Montgomery, AL; Mark Wood Millsap of Little Rock, AK; grandchildren Dempsey Wiley Moody, IV of Nashville, TN; George Wood Moody of Nashville, TN; Philip Galloway Moody of Montgomery, AL; William Michael McCowan and James McDaniel McCowan of Birmingham, AL; Elizabeth Ashley Clark, Charles Taylor Clark and Courtney Harriett Clark of Meridian, MS; Mary Addison Powell, Winston Ryding Powell and Arthur Gray Powell IV of Birmingham, AL; and first cousin the Right Reverend Milton LeGrand Wood (Ann) of Elberta, AL. Honorary Pallbearers include Past-Presidents of the Kiwanis Club Montgomery, Members of the Montgomery County Historical Society and the Pioneers of Montgomery.
