- It appears that Maria's birth name was something like Multach, according to birth records for three of her children (Multach, Mullag, Gluttach). According to Maria's death record, her father was "August Multich" and her mother "Maria Hassler." It is a remote possibility that Albert Grieger was her adopted father, and possibly "Maria Hassler" actually was Albert Grieger's wife Maria Hannefelder or an earlier wife with a similar name. It is worthy of note that according to evidence thus far gathered, Maria Hannedorf would have been age 14 when Maria Multach was born. It seems likely that "Maria Grieger" who accompanied the Grieger children to the United States actually their mother Maria Hannefelder with her age in error. According to the 1920 census, Maria Multach was born in Baden, but other evidence of her birthplace has yet to be found.
