- The following appeared on 19 January 2010 in the Niagara Gazette: (Lewiston) Erwin Daniel Lanphear, age 88, of Youngstown, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 17, 2010 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. Dan was born June 30, 1921 in West Almond, NY, the son of the late Linford and Mary (Waldorf) Lanphear, and was a graduate of Belmont High School.
He was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1944 to his honorable discharge in 1946. Dan served as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Bosque and was the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 1 Star, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Star. Dan was a Carpenter and a member of Carpenters Union Local #280 in Niagara Falls, NY for over 55 years. He retired in 1983 from Scrufari Construction where he was employed through the Union for many years.
Dan was a member of the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Company and Exempts, as well as a former member of the Moose Lodge #55 in Holiday, FL and the LaSalle Sportsman Club. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He traveled the world with his wife, Mary Lou (Hoffman) Bird Lanphear, whom he married August 30, 1963. They spent many retirement winters in Holiday, FL. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a gentle, strong, soft spoken, hard working man who was an excellent carpenter.
In addition to his wife, Mary Lou, he is survived by his children, Lynn (Linda) Lanphear of Pittsford, NY, Danny (Donna) Lanphear of Lewiston, Suzanne Kim (Pete) Burrows of Mission Viejo, CA, Laurie (Duane) Murray of Youngstown, Lynn (Fred) Wier of Plano, TX, and Sandy Hays (John) Mies of Youngstown; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Norma (late Glenn) Guinnip and Audrey (late Ken) Hall, both of Scio, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Alton Lanphear; and a sister, Dorla Gebhardt and he was the son-in-law of the late John and Dorothy Hoffman and the brother-in-law of Donald Hoffman and the late Gerry (Hoffman) Bement.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be held Friday, January 22nd at 11:00 AM in the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church St., Youngstown, with the Rev. Charles Lamb officiating. There is no prior visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. St. Mary's Hospital Health Care Center Foundation, 5300 Military Rd., Lewiston, NY 14092, or to the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., PO Box 387, Youngstown, NY 14174.
