  • The following appeared on 12 May 1942 in the Niagara Falls Gazette: Overcome by carbon monoxide gas while making repairs to a gas tank in the research department of the Electro Metallurgical company's plant in Forty-seventh street, at 6:25 o'clock last evening, Harold M. Boos, 26, of 609 Thirty-first street, died in spite of prolonged efforts to revive him.
One other man, Thomas Farmer, 33, of 1732 Welch avenue, was overcome and a third man, C. G. Chadwick, 247 Third street, was injured in an attempt to rescue Boos. Farmer is in Memorial hospital, where his condition was reported as good today. Chadwick was given first aid treatment in the plant and did not go to a hospital.
Dr. Harry R. Emes, coroner, said today that his investigation disclosed that Boos while engaged in making the repairs had donned a gas mask and entered the tank, which was filled with gas. In spite of the mask, he was overcome and signalled to the other workmen, who went to his aid. Chadwick slipped and fell, cutting his head while mounting a ladder to enter the tank. Farmer was overcome in getting Boos from the receptacle.
The fire department inhalator crew was summoned from fire headquarters. The firemen worked for more than an hour over Boos but could not revive him. Dr. Nicholas I. Ardan, plant physician, pronounced him dead. Farmer was rushed to the hospital after being given first aid treatment.
