- He married Letitia Bryans, daughter of Thomas Bryans and Jane Graham, on 17 June 1886 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, at Grace Episcopal Church.
- Apparently Letitia Bryans Baker died not long after the marriage. Nelson married Sadie McKenney DuFrane in 1917, and they raised a large combined family in Erie County.
- The following appeared on 16 October 1917 in the Buffalo Evening News: Mr. Joseph J. McKenney of Niagara Falls, N. Y., announces the engagement of his daughter, mrs. Sadie DuFrane, to Mr. Nelson M. Baker, the marriage to take place in Buffalo, N. Y., in November.
- He married Sadie McKenney, daughter of Joseph J. McKenney, in November 1917.
- The following appeared on 23 April 1922 in The Illustrated Buffalo Express: The funeral of Lewis P. Baker, who died yesterday at his family home, No. 860 Auburn avenue, will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The services will be private. The Rev. Frederick J. Kahler of Holy Trinity Lutheran church will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.
Mr. Baker was born in Buffalo 83 years ago and has lived here all his life. He was a brother of the Right Rev. Nelson H. Baker, vicar general of the Catholic diocese, and for the last twenty years had been in charge of the real estate of the diocese at Lackawanna.
Besides his widow, Mr. Baker is survived by the children: Nelson M., Mrs. William L. Seligmann, George E. and Francis A. of Buffalo and Lewis H. of Baltimore; three brothers, the Right Rev. Nelson H. Baker and Ransom R. Baker of Buffalo and Andrew M. Baker of Los Angeles, Cal. - Nelson M. Baker died in March 1936.

- The following appeared on 1 August 1936 in the Buffalo Courier-Express: Pope Pius XI last night joined with fellow Catholics of the metropolitan area in mourning the death of Msgr. Nelson H. Baker.
Prayers will be said in the vatican by the Pope for the repose of Father Baker's soul. In his cablegram Pope Pius called the dead pirest "the well beloved American apostle of charity" and a "faithful servant of his God and the poor."

Hundreds who passed the coffin touched the hand of Father Baker and then went to the communion rail to pray.
Among those in the church yesterday was Mrs. Nelson M. Baker, 2068 Abbott Road, Lackawanna, widow of one of Father Baker's nephews. Her husband, who was the son of Lewis Baker, died last March. They had five children, who were favorites of their grand-uncle, she said.
