  • The following appeared on 20 July 1936 in the Niagara Falls Gazette: Death came to Patrolman Charles William Regenhardt, one of the two oldest members of the Falls police department in point of service with the rank of partolman, in Mount St. Mary's hospital Saturday evening at 6 o'clock, after an illness of four weeks. Members of Mr. Regenhardt's family said today that his illness resulted from a fall which he had at police headquarters last February.
Funeral services for Patrolman Regenhardt will be held in the family home, 2125 Lockport street, on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and in Church of the Sacred Heart at 8:30 o'clock, with burial in Riverdale cemetery.
A native of the old village of Suspension Bridge, Patrolman Regenhardt was a son of the late Frederick and Frances Regenhardt, pioneer residents of the old north end village. He was born on March 10, 1877, and was first appointed a patrolman on June 4, 1901, serving temporarily until November of that year, known in Falls annals as Pan-American year.
On April 8, 1902, Patrolman Regenhardt was appointed permanently and served until he was stricken by the illness that resulted in his death. On Feb. 1, 1913, he was assigned as a patrol driver and drove the first automobile patrol put in service in the Falls department.
Of genial temperament, Patrolman Regenhardt was popular with members of the department and had a large acquaintance throughout the city, being unusually popular with the rank and file of citizens whom he served the approximately 35 years he was on the force. Patrolman Regenhardt was actively identified with Niagara Falls lodge, 346, B.P.O Elks.
Surviving Patrolman Regenhardt are his wife, Mrs. Henen Regenhardt, three children, Carl, Shirley and William, a brother, Fred Regenhardt, and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth McDonald, Mrs. Mary Laneau, and Mrs. George Daul, all of this city.
Patrolman Regenhardt's death leaves Patrolman Michael Pierce as the oldest patrolman in the department. Pierce was appointed in 1902, the same year that Patrolman Regenhardt became a permanent patrolman.
