  • At age 21, G. W. Mitchell joined and mustered in as a private for 12 months Capt. James H. Clanton's Company B (Montgomery Mounted Rifles), Alabama Volunteers, attached to the 1st Alabama Cavalry Brigade, CSA, on 30 April 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was discharged for general disability while stationed near Pensacola, Florida, to return to his home in Mt. Meigs. At the time of his discharge he was described as 22 years of age, six feet high, of fair complexion with blue eyes and light hair, by occupation when enrolled a planter.
  • At age 22, G. W. Mitchell enlisted as a private in Captain Semple's Company, Alabama Volunters (subsequently Goldthwaite's Battery, Light Artillery), on 7 March 1862 in Montgomery, Alabama, for the duration of the war.
  • Green Wood Mitchell died on 8 October 1862 in Perryville, Boyle County, Kentucky, killed in action by cannon shot.
