Laurier, Director of the Kentucky Central Band, now engaged at the Fair, plays with a good deal more vim then he did before Tuesday Morning because he is a new pap of a new girl baby, the first born.  The girls at the young ladies table will go for him tonight to take a chance on everything on their table, because he now feels so rich.

  • The following appeared on 25 April 1907 in a local newspaper: Poolroom Gang Deprives Fred Lauer of His Work. Member of Jury Which Fined Huber $10,000 Makes Astounding Charge. Local Labor Circles Profoundly Stirred Up by This Latest Move of the Grafters. Fred Lauer, a member of the Musicians' Union, who was one of the jury that fined George Huber $10,000 for suffering a poolroom on his premises, Huber's Garden, is now out of a job, and boldly charges that it was due to the machinations of the desperate poolroom grafters. Lauer until last Saturday was the clarinet player in a prominent Cincinnati Restaurant.  He said to The Post that on last Saturday night the bandmaster came to him and told him his services were no longer required. He was thunderstruck, as there had never been any complaint about the manner in which he played.  He asked what the reason was and says the bandmaster told him the restaurant management had directed it. "But why?" persisted Lauer. "Because," he alleges he was told, "the poolroom gang in Newport have demanded that you be fired.  You were one of the jury that tried George Huber and fined him $10,000." The committee of citizens and ministers of Newport who are fighting the poolroom gang have found out all about the poolroom's latest alleged move, and this afternoon and evening will spread broadcast a circular which says in part: "One of the jurors who convicted Huber for permitting the poolroom in his premises and rendered the verdict for $10,000 against him was discharged from his position in the orchestra at a certain Cincinnati Restaurant and was informed that he was discharged because the men who ran the poolroom had demanded his dismissal. "Will the labor unions allow a member to be persecuted because he had the courage of his convictions?" A motion for a new trial has been filed by Huber's attorneys, and arguments will be heard Friday morning, April 26.  The Judge set aside the $5000 verdict against Ehrlich. "Is such a verdict excessive against an employee of the St. Louis syndicate controlling millions?  Five juries consisting of 60 representative men of Campbell co., have convicted the poolroom crowd, but the poolroom still curses Campbell co.  How long will this continue?" The circular boldly gives the name of the restaurant and also boldly puts matters up to Judge Berry.  When the labor union leaders hear of the Lauer incident it is expected a profound sensation will be created, and that the bitter feelings against the poolroom grafters will be increased tenfold.
