- John Small was born circa 1877 in Elba Township, Winona County, Minnesota.
- The following appeared on 10 January 1879 in the St. Charles Times: Just before going to press we received the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. James Small, of Elba, which occurred early on Wednesday morning last. The cause of death is unknown to us, save that it was accompanied by a pain in the side. Four little children are thus left motherless. Mrs. Small was well, we are informed and doing her usual housework the day previous and her death was a sudden and unexpected blow to her family, who will have the sympathy of their many friends. Mrs. Small was the sister of Mr. T. Asbridge, and granddaughter of Mrs. Parrott of this city.

- John Small died on 27 November 1954 in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota, at St. Mary's Hospital or the 26th.
- He was interred at Calvary Cemetery, St. Charles, Winona County, Minnesota.
- The following appeared on 27 November 1954 in The Winona Daily News: (St. Charles) John Small, 76, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Funeral arrangements at the Sellner Funeral Home are incomplete.
Born in Elba Township May 7, 1878, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Small. He was married to the former Miss Mary Brogan, Chyatfield, about 1903 and the couple resided on a farm north of St. Charles for a number of years and also operated an elevator here. Mrs. Small died about 1930.
In 1943, Small moved to Winona and resided there until moving to Rochester about two months ago. He married again in 1943.
Surviving are his wife, Rose, Rochester; two sons, Cyril and James, and two daughters, Veronica and Catherine, a stepson, Kevin Small, 417 W. King St., Winona; a sister, Mrs. John Spencer, Blue Earth, and two brothers, Fred and Thomas, both of St. Charles. Two sisters and a brother are dead. - The following appeared on 29 November 1954 in The Winona Daily News: (St. Charles) Funeral services for John Small, 76, who died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Charles Catholic Church, the Rev. H. L. McNallan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The Rosary will be said at the Sellner Funeral Home at 8 o'clock tonight. Friends may call at the funeral home until the time of the service.
