- The following appeared on 22 September 1942 in The Sheboygan Press: (Kiel) Mrs. Sophie Manz, 76, widow of Fred Manz, died suddenly early this morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Hanke, in the town of New Holstein after suffering a stroke. She was born in the town of Rhine on Dec. 20, 1866, the daughter of John and Justine [Reinick] Schmahl. She was married to Fred Manz on March 24, 1885, in the town of Rhine, and for several years after their marriage they lived at Elkhart Lake. For the past 36 years she had lived in Kiel. Mr. Manz passed away in November, 1937. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. William [Linda] Reseburg of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Percy [Nelda] Belshek of Quebec, Canada, Mrs. Carl [Anita] Hanke in the town of New Holstein, and Mrs. Raymond [Adelia] Johnson of Kiel; four sons, Frank, Arthur, Benjamin, and Alvin Manz, all of Kiel; two brothers, Christian Schmahl of the town of Rhine and Fred Schmahl of Kiel; 27 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in Wednesday’s Press.
