  • The following appeared on 11 December 1990 in The Record: Funeral services were held Monday for Dr. Irving Ehrenfeld, the former director of medicine at Passaic General Hospital and founder of the Passaic Internal Medicine Group. /P/ Ehrenfeld, who had also been prominently involved in charitable programs organized by North Jersey's Jewish community, died Friday at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood after a short illness. He was 86. /P/ Ehrenfeld, who lived most of his life in Passaic and Clifton, was an allergist and gastroenterologist for 53 years before retiring recently. He pioneered both the use of outpatient care for diabetics and research on the effects of smoking on peptic ulcers. He remained active in anti-smoking campaigns at Passaic General Hospital after his retirement, said spokeswoman Ceu Cirne-Neves. /P/ Ehrenfeld graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia College in three years. He received his medical degree from New York University Medical School, where he returned to teach gastroenterological radiology after completing his internship at Bellevue Hospital, New York City. /P/ He was a member of Temple Emanuel, Passaic, for more than 60 years, Rabbi Joseph Herman said. Herman recalled Ehrenfeld and his late wife, the former Anne Shapiro, as "a team deeply enmeshed in Jewish philanthrophy and in aiding the distressed in the community and giving their aid and support to the country of Israel. " /P/ Ehrenfeld and his late wife, who died in 1987, were active in community affairs. Herman said Ehrenfeld was the first physician in the country to head a Jewish Federation campaign and served for a time as president of the Jewish Federation of Passaic-Clifton. /P/ Dr. Ehrenfeld is survived by a son, Dr. David Ehrenfeld of Highland Park; a brother, Dr. Edward Ehrenfeld in Florida; a sister, Mildred Kramer of Passaic; two brothers, and six grandchildren. A daughter, Judith Feiner, died in 1985. /P/ Ehrenfeld was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Rochelle Park. Arrangements were by Jewish Memorial Chapel, 66 Howe Ave., Passaic. /P/ Donations to the Anne Ehrenfeld Memorial Fund, Jewish Federation of Passaic-Clifton, 199 Scoles Ave., Clifton, N.J. 07012, would be appreciated.
