He was a man who knew the meaning of the word duty, to his family and his community, to his country and to God. /P/ It was that humility along with his loyalty that may be the defining characteristics of the man. No one who knew him ever heard him boast about his many accomplishments. His pride was in service, whether it be to his family, his community or to God. He never asked for recognition, though recognition he deserved and received. He led and taught by example, and his quiet strength was an inspiration to all those who met him. /P/ It is for us now to honor his memory by living our lives as we know he would have wanted with dignity, honor, loyalty and especially faith. Faith that "We can do everything through him who gives us strength." (Phil 4:13) The world may be the lesser for his passing, but all of us will be the better for having known him. /P/ In 1941, Charles entered the Army as a private and achieved every enlisted man's rank to Master Sgt. He then received his commission as a 1st Lt. in Infantry and served in Germany with the 78th Division. After 5 years of active duty and 22 years of service he retired as a Major. He married the love of his life Tillie Hejl and together they enjoyed almost 63 years. /P/ A graduate of Baylor University, Charles served as city manager in Daingerfield, Georgetown and Mission (1969 - 1981). He worked tirelessly on the new Mission Hospital, Mission Library and the Anzalduas bridge project. Locally he was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Mission C.W.V. /P/ Charles was always a fighter, he overcame many health problems to the amazement of his doctors and inspired others to continue living. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, honesty and faith. /P/ Thank you Dad and Grandpa for the example you have set for us. /P/ Visitation will be held today from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm with the family present from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and a rosary service at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mission. Burial will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission.
