- The following appeared on 31 March 1924 in The Buffalo Morning ExpressJohn F. Burfeind, former Police chief, died at 4 o'clock this morning at his home, No. 78 Richmond avenue. He had been ill for months. He had been stricken with a serious illness which forced him to resign on November 18, 1923. Death resulted yesterday morning after an all night vigil by friends and relatives. /P/ The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon from his home and from the Universalist Church of the Messiah at 3 o'clock. The former chief was a member of Ismailia Temple, and the Odd Fellows. /P/ Born in Buffalo on March 19, 1859, the son of an army officer who fought through the Civil war, the former chief was appointed a policeman on August 22, 1883. He worked out of half a dozen station houses, and on January 1, 1891, he was detailed as a precinct detective and sent to No. 13 station. /P/ He was promoted to a captaincy on July 2, 1894, and assigned to No. 4 station, Sycamore and Ash streets, where he remained for many years. In a general shakeup of the department some years ago, Captain Burfeind was shifted to No. 13 station in Austin street. He was returned to No. 4 station shortly and remained in command there until he was promoted to chief of the department, replacing Chief Higgins, on January 2, 1922. /P/ Chief Burfeind was superannuated on January 1, 1924, because of failing health, and had lived in retirement since then.
