- The following appeared on 11 February 2004 in the [Batavia] Daily News: Mrs. Dorothy Ida Sierk, 83, a lifetime resident of Darien Center who with her husband ran a dairy farm and who enjoyed sewing, gardening, band concerts and watching whales and birds, died Monday (Feb. 9, 2004) at Crossroads House after a brief battle with cancer. /P/ Mrs. Sierk was born June 22, 1920, in her parents' home in Darien Center. She was daughter of the late Charles and Grace Welker Wild. She attended school in Darien and Attica and graduated in 1937 from Attica High School. She married Norman Lindsey Sierk on Aug. 5, 1939. They ran a dairy farm for more tha 40 years, beginning in 1942 when they spent 17 years as partners with her father. Beginning in 1966, they partnered with their eldest son, the late Rev. Martin G. Sierk. /P/ Mrs. Sierk was unable to attend college because of the Depression but she and her husband loved books and learning, something they passed to their children who all graduated from Cornell University. /P/ Mrs. Sierk was a 4-H leader, member of Darien Grange, Farm Bureau, Ladies Aid Society, Landmark Society and Genesee County Human Rights Commission. She was a life member of Darien United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher. /P/ Her husband died in 1998. Her son [Rev. Martin Gerald Sierk], who lived in Attica, died in June 2001. /P/ Survivors include two sons, Randall (Cynthia) Sierk of Christiana, Pa., and Arnold (Christina) Sierk of Los Alamos, N.M; a daughter, Dr. Anne (Dr. Kurt Stange) Sierk of Shaker Heights, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, the Rev. Carol Sierk of Attica; three sisters, Onalee Brown of Geneva, Virginia (Richard) Garrett of Stanley, N.C., and Evelyn (Clifford) Jordan of Auburn; nine grandchildren, Eileen Sierk Adams of Fairport, Michael Sierk of Charlottesville, Va., Emily Sierk Fontaine of Medford, N.J., Peter Sierk of West Chester, Pa., Brian Sierk of Gladstone, Mo., Charles Sierk of Fayetteville, Pa., Kimberly Sierk of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jonathan and Carolyn Stange of Shaker Heights; and five great-grandchildren in New York, Virginia and Missouri. /P/ Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at H.E. Turner and Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St., Batavia. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Darien United Methodist Church, 1951 Broadway, Darien Center, NY 14040. Burial will be in Darien Cemetery, a few hundred feet from where she was born. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14020 or to the church.
