- The following appeared on 10 April 1948 in the Niagara Falls Gazette: Mrs. Johanna Bale, 1869 Weston avenue, will celebrate her eighty-sixth birthday on Tuesday at a party to be given by her relatives in Niagara Falls. A lifelong resident of this city, she was born April 13, 1862, at 1013 Niagara avenue.
Mrs. Bale married J. Michael Young and had three children, Arnold, Hilda (Mrs. Joseph Martin) and Fred. After the death of her husband, she married Edward C. Bale, well known local carpenter, who built their home at 1622 Weston avenue, where she livedf until his death in 1944. Their one child, Edith, died at the age of four.
Since the death of her second husband, Mrs. Bale has made her home with the only living child, Mrs. Martin. She has four grandchildren, Mrs. James Howlett, mrs. Hardell (Mary Lou) Ship and Melvin Young, this city, and Mrs. Lee Wolvern, Pittsburgh, Pa., and five great grandchildren.
Until Mr. Bale's death she did all her own housework and spent much of her time caring for a large garden. Very fond of walking, Mrs. Bale is disgusted with the younger generation for riding in cars everywhere they go. She used to think nothing of walking from her home at the north end to the Falls street business section and back again.
Her favorite hobbies are crocheting and quilting. Unfrotunately, in recent years she has been troubled with her eyes and has had to give up the intricate quilting for which she once was widely known.
She has made innumerable quilts for friends and relatives, and for many years was a member of the sewing circle at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. She has crocheted afghans, tablecloths, doilies, chair sets and many other intricate pieces of work.
Mrs. Bale has been an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church all her life, having been baptised, confirmed and married there. She has been a member of the Ladies' Aid society for 60 years, and believes that church affiliations are essential to happy living.
Her annual birthday celebration has been a big event in her life since her early married days. The party on Tuesday will be attended by her daughter, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Among those attending will be John E. Mackenna, a favorite nephew, and James W. Heary, Niagara county coroner, a grand nephew.
