  • The following appeared on 9 August 2001 in The Saratogian: Edwin J. Izzo, of McAllister Drive, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 6, 2001 at his residence after a long illness. He was 78. Born on Feb. 23, 1923 in Saratoga Springs, he was a son of the late Dominic and Jennie (Bishop) Izzo, the youngest and last surviving child of 22 brothers and sisters. A lifelong resident and city native, he was educated at St. Peter's Academy and in the local public school system. He was employed at the VanRaalte & Company for several years prior to World War II. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with Company G, 180th Infantry Division in the European and North African theaters, being wounded while supporting Allied efforts in Italy. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his valor and sacrifice. Following his service, he returned to the VanRaalte Co. in several management positions. He later worked at Native Textile Inc. in Glens Falls. During his tenure, he was credited with several product development patents that changed the manufacturing process for textile production throughout the industry. He retired as plant manager of Native Textiles in 1975. He was a member of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church. Throughout his entire life, it was his family and friends that he held most important. He enjoyed golf and followed New York Yankees baseball. It was life's small gifts that he held so precious. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn (Derlick) Izzo; his children and their spouses, Leonard E. (Lenora) Izzo and Dr. Brian J. (Patricia) Izzo, all of Saratoga Springs, Mrs. John (Nancy) Fleming of Wilton and Mrs. Richard (Janet) Sherin of Rochester; eight grandchildren, Robert and his wife, Christine Izzo of Clifton Park, Joshua, Jessica, Sarah and Timothy Izzo, all of Saratoga Springs, Patrick Fleming of Cleveland, Ohio, Carrie Fleming of Wilton and Kyle Sherin of Rochester; two great-grandchildren, Jason and Nicholas Izzo of Clifton Park; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10 in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Francis J. Sullivan, C.Ss.R., associate pastor. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville.
