Command Sgt. Maj. Thierry died Thursday, April 21, 2011, at a local hospital following a lengthy illness.
Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, under direction of Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
He was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Plaisance, La., to Bessie and Arthur Thierry. He was the second of seven children. He was educated at local schools and later attended Cameron University. He entered the Army on Dec. 20, 1950, in Alexandra, La. He retired from the Army on March 1, 1981, at Fort Sill. He married Charlene Duplechain on Dec. 29, 1956, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lawtell, La.
He was a farmer by trade. He was an avid gardener and provided fruit and vegetables to friends and neighbors. He enjoyed cooking and his specialty was gumbo. His family's fondest memories were his backyard cookouts.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Leonce Henry Thierry Jr., Galveston, Texas; four daughters: Bonita Thierry, Houston, Texas; Kimberly Thierry, Springfield, Va; Lisa Thierry, Cedar Hill, Texas; and Lathonya Shivers, Oklahoma City; six grandchildren: Patrick Lyons, Queens, New York; Mary Elisabeth Lyons and George Lyons, Cedar Hill, Texas; Jessica Thomas, Atlanta; and Nicholas Shivers and Vincent Shivers, Oklahoma City; two brothers: Leon Thierry, Plaisance, La., and Arthur Thierry, Lake Charles, La; and two sisters: Yvonne Johnson and Marva Bell of Plaisance, La.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert James Thierry; and a sister, Norma Jean Frank.
