- James S. Bowman was born on 29 January 1859 in Scottsdale, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
- He married Amanda Jane Swain, daughter of Cyrus Swain and Mary (?), on 7 March 1895 in Fayette, Pennsylvania, by license issued on 21 February, at the residence of Cyrus Swain, with Rev. J. R. Clark officiating.. License also was issued to them in Westmoreland County on 27 February..
- Herman Hamel Bowman registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 in Pennsylvania while single and living in Stauffer, employed farming by James s. Bowman in Bullskin Township.
- James S. Bowman became a widower at the 23 June 1928 death of his wife Amanda Jane Swain.
- The following appeared on 30 March 1942 in The Morning Herald: Herman Hamel Bowman, 47, of Route 51, near Smock, died in Uniontown hospital Friday night, March 27, 1942, following a short illness of compllications.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Della Bowman; six children, Mrs. John Tucker of Rowes Run; and Gertrude, Herman, Jr., Owen, Harold, and Clifton Bowman all at home; his father, James Bowman of Scottsdale; two brothers, Elmer Bowman of Smock and Robert Bowman of Mount Pleasant and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Fisher of Mount Pleasant.
The body has been removed from the Ira Blair and Sons Funeral Home, Perryopolis, to the home of Elmer Bowman, where the funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, followed by additional rites at 2:30 o'clock at the Flatwood Baptist church, Burial will follow in the church cemetery. - James S. Bowman died in 1956.
- He was interred at Pennsville Baptist Cemetery, Pennsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
- The following appeared on 10 March 1956 in The Daily Courier: (Mount Pleasant) James s. Bowman, 98 years, one month and 17 days old, o Mount Pleasant, R. D. 3, died at 10:45 o'clock Friday morning at the Frick Memorial Hospital.
A retired stone mason, he was the oldest member of the West Overton Historical Society.
He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Ruth fisher of Buckeye; four sons, robert and Charles H. of Bessemer, Elmer of Uniontown and George K. of Oakland, Calif; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Baker of Connellsville; two stepsons, Orin and Edward Thomas of Smock; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Cell Trout of Acme.
The fuenral service will be held at the Grimm funeral home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in charge of the Rev. Robert Stephens. Interment iwll be in Pennsville Independent Cemetery.
