  • Herman Hamel Bowman and Della (?) appeared in the US federal census of 1 April 1940 in Smock, Pennsylvania. Other members of the household included Harold Eugene Bowman. Also in the household were children Gertrude (age 19), Herman Jr. (13), Owen (9) and Clifton (1).
  • Della (?) became a widow at his death.
  • The following appeared on 30 March 1942 in The Morning Herald: Herman Hamel Bowman, 47, of Route 51, near Smock, died in Uniontown hospital Friday night, March 27, 1942, following a short illness of compllications.
         Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Della Bowman; six children, Mrs. John Tucker of Rowes Run; and Gertrude, Herman, Jr., Owen, Harold, and Clifton Bowman all at home; his father, James Bowman of Scottsdale; two brothers, Elmer Bowman of Smock and Robert Bowman of Mount Pleasant and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Fisher of Mount Pleasant.
         The body has been removed from the Ira Blair and Sons Funeral Home, Perryopolis, to the home of Elmer Bowman, where the funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, followed by additional rites at 2:30 o'clock at the Flatwood Baptist church, Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Harold was born on January 19, 1935 in Smock, PA, one of six children born to Herman and Della Bowman. He graduated salutatorian of his high school class, and then received his Bachelors degree from Roberts Wesleyan College, Masters from Cornell University and a PhD. from the University of Pittsburgh.
          Harold is survived by his wife of 55 years, Priscilla S. Bowman; his son, Brent (Wendy) Bowman of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Jill (David) Nocera, Rochester, NY; daughter-in-law, Anita Bowman, Atlanta, GA. Predeceased by his son, Bryce Bowman.
          Harold began a career in Education in New York State. He taught in Greece, NY. Spent two years at the American School in Japan and upon his return to Greece was Curriculum Coordinator for the district. In 1975, Harold became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Lockport, NY, and in 1982 was promoted to Superintendent of Schools for the Lockport City School District. In January of 1985, Harold was appointed District Superintendent of the Board of Cooperative Education in Stanley, NY. He worked for the New York Commissioner of Education and provided leadership to District School Systems in the Wayne Finger Lakes region that encompassed five counties, 26 school districts and 43,000 students.
          Throughout his career he received numerous awards including; Award of Excellence for continuous service to the community by the United Way; Great Appreciation for outstanding leadership and service on behalf of Whole Languages across New York State; Governance Award for significant contributions to the Governance of the Finger Lakes Regional Education Center as Chairman 1988-1993; New York State Council of School Superintendents tribute for exemplary service to the children of New York State and the Chairman of the Ethics Committee; an award for appreciation in 1993 for inspired visionary leadership involving commitment to the education of the people of the Wayne Finger Lakes Region and uncompromising dedication to the mission of that organization.
          Harold was the fifth of the six Bowman children. He is survived by all of his siblings, Gertrude (Curt) Kenney, Yorktown, VA, Evelyn (John) Tucker, Uniontown, PA; brothers, Herman (Doris) Bowman, Orchard Park, NY, Orrin (Mary Alice) Bowman, Honeoye, NY, Clifton (Margaret) Bowman, Jamestown, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
          Harold was beloved by countless friends, admired for his accomplishments and for his sweet spirit and friendship. He was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, Leesburg, FL.
          A celebration in Harold's memory will be held on October 20, 2012 at the Manor in The Plantation, Leesburg, FL at 10:30 AM. A memory celebration will be held at the bi-annual gathering of the Bowman's in Uniontown, PA on November 7, 2012.
