Yesterday, however, his mother was given a happy surprise when she opened a thick envelope to find that it contained a long letter from her son, detailing his adventures from the time he had left home until the day that the letter had been written, but her joy was heightened by finding in the letter a full length photograph of her son in the uniform of a United States infantryman, the picture of a tall, straight and handsome young fellow, who looked as though he were fit to do anything or to undertake any task and make a success of it. The letter stated that about two years ago the boy had joined the Twentieth United States infantry and had been with that unit of the army ever since; that he liked the life of a soldier and that it had been of great benefit to him. He is stationed at the present time at Fort Douglas, Utah, but says that he is expecting that his regiment will receive orders at most any time to entrain for some seaport on the Atlantic coast, and that all of the men of the regiment are hoping that the orders to do so will not be long delayed.
  • The following appeared on 15 April 1919 in The Deadwood Daily Pioneer-Times: Clarence Shea, who enlisted with the United States regulars several years ago, and who has seen much service in the Philippines and in France, returned from Fort Riley, Kas. He is home on a month's furlough, and has come for the purpose of visiting with his mother, Mrs. Ellis Davies of Lead, and his sisters. During his time of service with the Twentieth regular infantry, Clarence has made good and is a sergeant wagonner with his regiment, well liked by his officers and by the men with whom he is serving. His regiment is one of the fighting units of the regular establishment, and he has seen service in many parts of the world. Yesterday he was given quite a reception by his old friends in Lead.
