- The following appeared on 20 April 1946 in The Niagara Falls Gazette: (Lockport, April 20) Only charred ruins remained today of the home of William Atkinson, in the Hartland road, north of Gasport, where three members of the Atkinson family narrowly escaped Thursday in a fire of undetermined origin. The loss is estmated at $5,000 partly insured.
Mr. Atkinson, a mechanic employed by the Ridge road Bus lines in this city, had gone to work and a 14-year-old daughter had left for school when a passing motorist, William McAvoy, of Barker, discovered the house in flames.
Rushing to the house he found Mrs. Atkinson, her three-year-old daughter and 71-year-old mother trapped by the flames which had cut off their escape by the front porch stairs. He assisted them over a railing to safety on the ground. The Atkinsons were sleeping when aroused by the fire.
. The Gasport Fire company saved two adjoining buildings. The house was formerly owned by Eli Rorick and was known as the Rorick place. Recently Mr. Atkinson had made improvements to the property. - The following appeared on 25 February 1950 in the Buffalo Courier-Express: [Died] Albert Atkinson, in this city, February 22, 1950, beloved husband of Elizabeth Gregory; father of William A., Milton G. of Gasport, N. Y., Robert of Phoenix, Ariz., and Thelma Mueller; brother of Mrs. Frieda Swyer of Oakland, Cal., Mrs. Jennie Hoerner of Toronto, Ont., and Robert of Burlingame, Cal., and the late William J. Randell, Mrs. John O'Donnell, Mrs. Elizabeth Gross, Charles and Comley Randell; grandfather of William Atkinson, Thelma Dawson, Jean, Katherine, Milton, Jr., Mary, Dorothy, Mildred, Helen, Albert, Betty and Robert Atkinson; great-grandfather of David Atkinson. Funeral from the family residence, 272 South Huxley Dr. (off Cleveland Dr.), Sunday at 2 p. m. Friends invited.
